So I participated in a spelling bee at the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square. It was a benefit to help out the theatre. There was a kiddie spelling bee, a screening of the movie A Boy Named Charlie Brown and then came the grown-up bee. I went with my friend Suzi and of course we skipped the kiddie bee.
I was worried, though, because there weren't that many people when the movie started. The movie was great, featuring such songs as "Failure Face", whose lyrics I must learn. Nerd City Cambridge totally represented, though. As soon as the movie ended, the people flooded in, including my friend Johnny, Suzi's husband. They ended up having to have two rounds and a waiting list for a third round if there was enough time.
I made it to the last three of my round, but lost on the word 'sprechstimme'. You had to wait until the round was over to check the correct spelling of your word, but I didn't want to look like a nerd. Johnny was like, "You're thirty-one and you just paid to be in a spelling be on a Thursday night. Everyone else came here for the same thing. I don't think it's pretty clear that we're all nerds here."
